What Skills Separate the $50k Real Estate Agent from the $500k Agent?

Real estate can be a gratifying career. Not only do you get to craft your own schedule, but you also have no limit on how much money you can make.

Is it as easy as it looks? If you’ve been in the game for a while, you know that it’s not all launch parties and fat commission checks. It takes a lot of hard work, determination and consistency to stand out from the crowd.

The good news is you can organize your daily life and up-level your skills to help you create the success you deserve.

Today we’re going to cover some of the most important things you need if you’re going to have a lasting and prosperous career as a real estate agent. 

The Ability To Respond To Adversity

There is no shame in facing or overcoming adversity. If you can bounce back quickly from mistakes, you’re on your way to success. I honestly believe there are no failures. There is just feedback. Adversity sometimes comes when you least expect it. Adopting the right mindset and knowing where to focus next will help you have a rewarding career.

Decision Making

Great agents understand how to balance emotion with reason and make decisions that positively impact themselves and their clients.

Great real estate agents also know when to move quickly and proceed with the available information versus when to take more time and gather additional information. 


This is imperative. People can smell fake from miles away. Always act fairly, honestly, in good faith and to the best of your knowledge and ability at all times. Always act in your client’s best interests, except if it would be unlawful, unreasonable, improper or against your client’s instructions. Listen to your gut and act accordingly.

Attention to Details

As a real estate agent, you need to pay attention to the details. Whether you’re comparing housing prices, reviewing the fine print in contracts, or considering your client’s wish list, you’ve got to be comfortable with every single detail. Do not think people won’t notice. Take the time, learn to listen and understand the little things matter massively!

The Ability to Solve Problems

Every client comes to you with a problem: they need help buying a house or selling a house. Your job is to solve that problem.

While the problem may be the same, there are different variations that you’ll need to tackle, such as the client’s budget or their “must sell by” timeline. You’ll need to feel comfortable with constantly solving problems – sometimes in ways that aren’t the most obvious or conventional.

Understand that No one is coming to Save You

I don’t mean to be harsh, but no is coming to save you. You need to find that inner strength and advocate for yourself and your dreams.

Professional Appearance

Coco Chanel once said, “Dress shabbily, they notice the Dress. Dress impeccably, they notice the person.” As a real estate agent, not only are you selling real estate, but you’re also selling yourself. You must care about how you look because others will. They’ll buy your image before they buy your pitch, so dress accordingly.

Get a Mentor 

Here are numerous benefits to working on a real estate team that many consider well worth the cost. Making the decision to work on a team can give you the experiences necessary to become more successful and make it a little easier to meet the goals you have for your career. 

Your team leader and team members will also introduce you to more people in the industry, therefore allowing you to make numerous professional connections. Professional connections can quickly jump-start a career, so it is best to have as many as possible. Making many professional connections working alone is attainable, but it would take you exponentially more time.
